Woman Burned, Left In Ditch In Small SC Town - Still No Answers 4 Yrs Later

Her name was Melissa Whitis and she was a mom of four kids who loved her very much. Whitis went to Pulaski County High School. She loved to bake and shop, and at the time of her murder, she was enrolled at Somerset Community College.

Melissa Whitis's body was found in a ditch in Richburg, SC on Lizzie Melton Road and burned severely on September 20th, 2019. They took fingerprints to identify her. They took DNA samples to help investigators try to figure out what had happened to her. The burning of her body made it so difficult that they had to use a medical device that was planted in her head years ago. This device made it a perfect match due to the serial numbers that were on that device that were traced back to her name when the procedure was done.

Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey was wondering how could she have ended up 100 miles away from where she was from in Kentucky.

As the story goes, Melissa had made a phone call from a gas station to her dad needing money and that was the last time her dad had actually heard from her. In addition, she was last seen at Walmart in Winston-Salem, NC, and then in South Carolina.

No one knew if she was with anyone or not.

This case has very little evidence and there are many unanswered questions.

The ironic thing here is the fact that there was no missing report done on Melissa's disappearance.

The only suspect that they were trying to link to her was a man by the name of Rex Heuermann.

Allegedly, he had a connection with three murders in New York and they were trying to seef if Melissa's murder had a potential connection with Heuermann.

The Rock Hill police department is also looking into different suspects. It seems like there are two different investigations and yet there's still no suspect that ties into Melissa's murder.

Are the cops holding back information on a potential suspect?

According to Larry Farris, Melissa's dad, he will not stop until the person who killed his daughter is found.

"Chester County, help us out finding Mel's killer, Clifton Whitis wrote. She is the mother of my two kids, Ethan and Emily, and she has two other kids, Skyler and Sophia. We really need justice. Thank you."

The Chester County Sheriff's Office is continuing its investigation and hoping that they can find an exact cause of death.

"It's horrific to see a human body discarded in a ditch," said Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey in an interview last year, "she was someone that was cared for and she cared for other people."

There is a small wreath where Melissa's body was found. Investigators hope someone will come forward with more information on this unknown murder and any information that links to the case.
