This Historic Georgia Cemetery is one of the Most Haunted in the Southeast

On the coast of Georgia lies Savannah, a beautiful city with plenty of history and paranormal hotspots. The town is known for its St. Patrick's Day celebration, delicious seafood, and nightlife. One trip down the streets will send your mind back to the olden days, but remember your soul belongs to spirits that lurk in the shadows, inside the buildings, and in the nearby graveyards.

Savannah, founded in 1733, is much like another historic city just up the road, Charleston, with plenty of specters waiting to meet you. One place that is said to be a paranormal hotbed is Bonaventure Cemetery. The old cemetery, once known as Evergreen Cemetery, was established in 1846.

“Evergreen Cemetery was designed as a traditional Victorian cemetery with curving pathways, lots of trees, and grassy areas. Although a cemetery, it was common for families to meet and picnic here while still providing a place of comfort and solace for the bereaved friends of relatives of those buried there.” - bonaventurehistorical.org

The cemetery is like something out of a fairytale - a level of mystic beauty. It is the combination of the gravestones and nature overlapping in a way that feels inviting. During the day, the cemetery is quite whimsical, and at night, well, the ambiance changes just slightly.

“The legend claims she appears as a normal, living girl in a white dress who vanishes without a trace when you get too close. To some, Little Gracie still lives.” - Ghosts and Gravestones

Little Gracie Watson was only six years old when she passed away from pneumonia. And to this day, people who visit the premises claim to see her. If you plan to visit, make sure that if you decide to leave toys, do not retrieve them. Gracie gets upset when you do that. And she shows her disdain by crying tears of blood.

It does not matter if you believe in ghosts or not, Savannah is one city you must visit. The Lantern will continue to cover history with all things that go bump in the night in Georgia in future articles.
