If you like hiking, history, or exploring South Carolina towns, especially during warmer months, watch out! You can find the occasional copperhead and other animals that can turn your good day into a bad one. But if you are careful and lucky, you may find yourself face-to-face with one of Hamilton Carhartt’s homes in Rock Hill. Carhartt? Yes. The Carhartt. Believe it or not, the ruins of the old home are one with nature today, but once a mansion many years ago!
“After Carhartt died, the property was left vacant for a time. New owners came in and tried to restore the property and its grounds, but the site was eventually deserted. Now all that’s left is the crumbling remains of the once-grand mansion.” - Igrohs, Atlas Obscura
Although Mr. Carharrt lived in Michigan, he had a second home in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The mansion constructed in the early 1930s was a beautiful and charming place during its time. Unfortunately, Hamilton Carhartt would leave all of his worldly possessions behind a few short years later when tragedy hit the family, and he died in an automobile accident. Today, a trail leads all curious seekers deep into the woods to the old ruins.
“For this adventure, you'll be hiking the Riverwalk Greenway Trail in Rock Hill, and you'll veer off onto the Riverwalk Green and Blue Loop biking trail (also used for hiking), or you could just use this trail only which begins at the Rock Hill Outdoor Center mountain biking area. The Carharrt name is famous for the clothing line his company produces. When people want a reliable layer of warmth and durability, they think Carharrt. Although the company has nothing to do with the Rock Hill area anymore, the ruins of what was once a full-size mansion remind the locals that their town was considered a relaxing getaway spot for Hamilton Carharrt and his family.
