According to recent phone records obtained by The Messenger, Susan Smith says she, "could be a good stepmom" and "see herself around kids." This comes one year before she is eligible for parole.
Susan Smith was convicted in 1994 of killing her two boys by drowning them in John D. Long Lake in Union County, SC.

Smith originally told investigators that she was carjacked by a black man, but eventually confessed to the murders. She received a letter from her then-boyfriend Tom Findlay before the murders, and this letter was found in the car with the boys when the car was brought up from the lake. Findlay told Smith in this letter that he did not want children.
Smith claims that she was going to commit suicide, but she was unable to. She put her car in neutral, lifted the emergency brake, and she stood there and watched her boys drown.
It took a full six minutes for the car to submerge. When she told detectives where to look for the car, she knew exactly where it was, indicating that she was watching. The lights were left on, and it was speculated she left them on, so she could see it as it was sinking.
Smith has been behind bars since November 1994 and is up for parole in 2024. She is housed at Leath Correctional Facility, and she has at least a dozen suitors she speaks with.
When the 52-year-old said that she could see herself around kids, her suitor responded, "You'd be great, babe. "
Smith's ex-husband, David Smith, vows to make sure she never gets parole.
The Lantern has FOIA'd Smith's phone calls as well, and we are currently waiting for them to be delivered.
